Animation Reference: Carlos F. Puertolas

Carlos has put together a great collection of his reference from some of his time at DreamWorks. Its great to see a side by side comparison of both. Pay attention to changes in the animation from the reference and how he pushed the animation even more. I like to think about why he would make those choices and it sometimes helps me understand my process a bit more to help push my animation choices.

Animation Addicts: Applying Human Reference to Quadrupeds

Tal Shwarzman over at Animation Addicts shares with us his workflow when it relates to using Human Reference to get a performance out of quadrupeds, in this case a cat. Some great insight to some animation workflows from one of his iAnimate demos.
A few short minuets edited from one of my Q&A’s at iAnimate that was dealing in taking human reference and applying it to a quadruped.
Head over to Animation Addicts to find for great stuff!

Animation Reference: Rhino House

Animation Reference: Rhino House

So I have had the pleasure of getting onto the Rhino House site recently and wow…I didn’t realize what I have been missing. I mean back a few years ago I bought The Human Motion Show, and has always been my go to for ref if I needed it. Getting onto their site now is a whole new realm and since the DVD they have upgraded a ton of new features. They have since added all of their DVD libraries to the site. So I’m going to give you all a bit of a review and hope it helps in your decisions.

When you enter there are lots of areas to choose from:

You can see all of the pictorial categories you can choose from and it even has them by animal. Once you click on one you then enter the Motion Library (I picked the squirrel).

You can see all of the areas to choose from within the Motion Library and this is within any Animal or Human (Behavior, Locomotion, Visuals, and Bonus).

I then chose Locomotion and clicked on a walk, which there were 18 different clips for walks. All the clip were different ranging in close-up to far away, front or back and of course profile.

You can see all of the different settings and the tools you can use. An amazing set of playback options made for an animator. Seems like it was meant for us oh wait it was. I have it set in this pic on Onion so that just like in 2D when you had your lightbox turned on you can see the previous frame, so as you frame by frame you can get a real sense of the posing. Amazing! You can adjust your speeds, add some markers and even set up Guides if you want. Plenty of tools to choose from.

If you find that you really want one of the video you can click on the download button and get the clip for a buck.

Here are a couple of videos that about the site….one is an Intro and the other explains some of the Tools I mentioned.

Hopefully this helped give all of you a good glimpse of the site and all of the wonderful Video Resources that are waiting. You can check out the site here and subscriptions here. Thanks again to the folks at Rhino House…great stuff!

Bodies in Motion : Animation Reference

Bodies in Motion : Animation Reference

I ran into this site a while back but just getting around to posting on this great reference. Scott Eaton shows off his Artistic Anatomy, Digital Sculpture and VFX. There is a category over on the side under Courses & Reference titled: Bodies in Motion Image Library. He has a ton of images of single frames of motion all put next to each other to show you the break-down of the motion.

So have a look around and check out some cool ref.

Animation Referance: Aaron Hartline

Animation Referance: Aaron Hartline

As many of you may know of Aaron Hartline. He does some pretty amazing work “Up” at Pixar. You can see lots of his shots on his blog. He used to be at Blue Sky where he was the character lead for Vlad the Vulture in Horton Hears A Who. In the link I have here, Aaron shows us his reference video that he captured and then the shots of Vlad. Great stuff to look at and get a feel of what goes into reference sometimes.

Have a look around and enjoy some of the great stuff on there.

Super Slow Motion Dog Reference

***Update***
The video link seems to not work any more so I found some other links that might help

 ***Update**

Hey Everyone
A co-worker sent this to me today. It’s pretty good super slow motion video reference of some dog motion. There is actually lots of this out on different varieties of character, be it humans or animals.

Saw this one on Today’s Big Thing, they always have cool stuff on this site.

I also found a good collection of them on Break.com. Anything from slow motion slaps to sneezes.

Enjoy
